Boys road teams sweep TRC Friday hoops tilts

From The News Reporter

Fairmont 42
East Columbus 39
The Fairmont Houdinis escaped East Columbus with an unlikely victory Friday. Yes, Fairmont’s mascot is the Golden Tornadoes, but when you make just 3 of 18 free throws and still win, it takes a little magic! Fairmont scored just nine points in the final quarter, but the Gators managed only two made free throws. Cedrique Smith drilled a three-pointer from the corner with 1:20 remaining to give Fairmont the 42-39 lead it ended the game with.

The next 80 seconds probably cost Gators coach Jeff Gainey a good night’s sleep. No matter how hard Fairmont tried to help East Columbus, the Gators simply could not take advantage. Fairmont took some ill-advised shots with the lead, but with the poor free throw shooting it displayed, the strategy may have been wise. East ended up with four possessions in those 80 seconds and never got a shot off. Three possessions ended in turnovers and a chance for a final three-point shot attempt wasn’t taken.

East Columbus held a 35-26 lead midway the third quarter before the Fairmont defensive pressure made, not making shots, but taking shots a difficult task.

Trey Brown, J.J. Faulkner and C.J Freeman scored eight points each for East Columbus.
