If misery does truly love company, then coaches of the four Columbus County girls basketball teams in the Three Rivers Conference should have shared a phone call over the weekend. None of the four came away with a victory. Three games had final margins of 20-plus points. The fourth was a heart-breaking loss for a team searching for its first victory.
East Columbus 30
Fairmont jumped out to a 16-7 lead after the initial eight minutes. East Columbus pulled to within four points and trailed 22-18 at halftime.
The Gators scored the first basket of the third period before Fairmont went on an 18-4 run to lead 40-24 entering the fourth quarter. Fairmont opened the final period with a 10-1 spurt to secure an insurmountable margin.
Fairmont’s Amyrikal Vaught topped all scorers with 18 points. Georgianna Waters added 16 for the Golden Tornadoes.
