ECHS Student, Teacher in Local Mission Work Last Summer

Two of East Columbus High School’s very own participated in a local mission trip within Columbus County with their church last summer.

Dance/theatre instructor Sloan Blair and sophomore Catelyn Tripp worked with Mission Serve, a Christian-based organization that partners with local city governments to assist those needing help rebuilding their homes after natural disasters.

Mission Serve, which uses volunteers from grade six up, believes in being the “hands and feet of Jesus Christ” and sharing His love through missions and home rehabilitation.

Approximately 330 people attended Mission Serve in Fair Bluff, July 7-14, 2018. They came from across the state. Several were from Florida.

Mission Serve came to Fair Bluff to help with rebuilding after 2016’s Hurricane Matthew.

Projects included roofing, wheelchair ramps, working at the sheriff’s office, putting down flooring, painting or helping with improvements at West Columbus High School, where the volunteers stayed.

Mission Serve assigned the church groups into squads so the volunteers would meet new people from different places and have the opportunity to become lifelong friends.

“It was an awesome experience,” Blair said. “Worship in the evenings was great! This trip itself, using your time for others in need, will really humble you. I am hoping to participate next year.”

“The best thing about being a part of Mission Serve family is being able to fellowship with other teenagers that have the same love for our God,” Tripp said. “It is very humbling to be able to work on people’s houses in my own county that have been damaged by Hurricane Matthew.

“To share the good news of Jesus Christ with people who might be unbelievers,” she said. “My youth group at Riegelwood Baptist Church has already signed up to go back next year to help out at Fair Bluff. It was the best week of my life.”

Mission Serve is returning to Fair Bluff this summer. There will be more jobs to do thanks to Hurricane Florence. Mission Serve welcomes any volunteers who want to spend a week of their time to serve others.
