East Columbus High School history teacher and basketball coach Marcus Skipper commutes daily from his Hampstead home, just north of Wilmington.
The New Jersey native attended Monmouth Regional High School in Tinton Falls, N.J. before enrolling at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington.
He transferred to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where he earned his bachelor’s degree in history. He also holds a master’s degree in school administration.
Before coming to ECHS, Skipper taught history at Southview, Trask and Topsail high schools. He also taught at Lakeside Alternative School.
He said he was attracted to ECHS by the, “Opportunity to work in a very diverse working environment and to resume my love for (coaching) basketball.” He added the things he likes best at ECHS are “the kids and interacting with my colleagues.”
He was recognized as “Golf Coach of the Year” at Southview.
Skipper is married to JoEl Skipper. They have one daughter, Chandler, 22.
Skipper said he became a teacher because of the “many influential teachers who impacted my life.”
He said his hope is for ECHS students is to become successful and productive citizens, adding, “Marry a successful woman and you will do well in life.”
Skipper’s favorite music is classic rock. He also likes the 1970’s television show, Sanford and Son starring Redd Foxx. His favorite movie is 1986’s Top Gun with Tom Cruise.
His favorite food is pasta and he likes the book Prince of Tides, written by South Carolina author Pat Conroy.
Skipper’s favorite app is Zello, his favorite team is the ECHS Gators and his favorite game is basketball.
He enjoys fishing, boating and golfing.
